The Last Two Months

Over the last two months on the road we've had several interesting experiences.  Whether we are in the van, eating at a restaurant or taking a day to do some sight-seeing, we have managed to find our share of adventures.  One fun (and sometimes not so fun) thing to do is trying new restaurants.  Andy has officially vowed to never go back to one resaurant and I have discovered a new favorite.  My new favorite restaurant is Friendly's.  This is a restaurant chain that we have noticed on the East coast.  In fact, the nearest Friendly's restaurant to my home in Iowa is in Defiance, Ohio.  That's a shame.  Friendly's is a delightful blend between Dairy Queen and Applebees, in my opinion.  Of course, the reason that I wanted to try Friendly's in the first place was because of the ice cream, even the Friendly's commercial will tell you that, "It's all about the ice cream."  I looked at their menu and saw a Peanut Butter Cup Sundae, and I just had to have it!--For dessert.  So on a lesser important note, what would I have for the main meal?  I looked through that menu and I was delighted to see that instead of the typical ice cream shop choices of a hot dog, cheeseburger, chicken strips (although a good choice), there were other options such as a buffalo chicken strip sandwich (which Andy got), steak, a ceasar salad, soup or a chicken quesadilla (which is what I ended up getting).  So, you can see why I believe that Friendly's is the perfect blend of restaurants and makes for the perfect choice for dinner.  We've only eaten there once for dinner while on this trip, so that is probably what maintains it's allure for me.  Any restaurant that we have to eat at more than three times, no matter how good, (ie: Panera) losses its delight for me.  On the other hand, while I have discovered a new favorite, Andy has discovered a distaste for another restaurant out here.  Have any of you eaten at a little restaurant called Baja Fresh?  We decided to try it after a positive recommendation from a friend.  Our experience there can be summed up in one question: how can you mess up chips and salsa??  If you know us, chips and salsa is one of our favorite snacks.  Any restaurant that serves chips and salsa is usually a shoe in for a great resturant, but not in this case, in our opinion.  Apparently, Baja Fresh must specialize in making their own special salsa recipe.  I ordered some chips and salsa while at the same time visualizing myself taking that first yummy bite.  We watched the man taking our order go to a pot with a ladle and dish out a bowl of "salsa" for us.  As he put it on our tray, I asked him, "is that salsa?"  He said "...yeah."  In Andy's words, it looked like dog soup.  It was brown with chunks in it.  I said it looked like vegetable stew.  I was the only one brave enough to try it, and it was not worth the $2.30 we paid for it.  So, Andy has vowed to never again visit a Baja Fresh.  Sorry to those of you that like that restaurant.
